The Kastanian Empire had stood for a thousand years. A decade of civil war and corrupt leadership has reduced it to a shadow of its former self. Beset by enemies beyond its shrinking borders and from competing factions within, it seems the end is near.

One man, though, believes the empire can be saved. Astiras Koros, general and governor of a province wracked with rebellion, seizes power and in so doing propels his family to the imperial throne. Astiras will have to display all his strength and courage to keep his dreams alive, for not only will he have to crush the rebellion in the province of Bragal, he will also have to purge the ruling elite of all opposition. It will not be an easy task, for many of his enemies are influential people, some of whom are very close to the throne itself.

He will also be forced to send his eldest son and only daughter on hazardous missions, tasks that will test both to their limits as well as avoid the killers on each of their trails. Isbel, Astiras’ wife, is left to cope alone with establishing the new Court in the face of rival interests, while her husband campaigns.

Argan, the younger son of Astiras, is thrown into the strange world of intrigue and conflict at the royal court, and the four year old has to try to adapt to his new surroundings, and the dangers that holds.

Empire of Avarice Chronicles of Kastania Book 1 edition by Tony Roberts Literature Fiction eBooks

Empire of Avarice has nothing to do with oil companies, banking or insurance. It is a spell binding tale about a usurper general named Astiras Koros who is forced to commit regicide and then match wits with a thoroughly corrupt nobility. While the plot does contain necessary elements for political intrigue, CASCA author Tony Roberts also provides the reader with many medieval battles, loads of cloak and dagger suspense, and the kind of whorehouse action that will make you thankful that you don't suffer from mysophobia.
It is a highly complex tale of respectable length and is meant to carry into a next generation of characters. Tony does a great job of developing subtle rifts in the Koros family and these events cause the reader to wonder how each family member is going to evolve in the next story. But this is not a soap opera. Each character lives on the edge of a razor, as you will find out.
My only criticism is that Tony dropped an occasional colloquialism into the dialogues. Slang terms that suggest that people are pretty much the same whether they are wearing medieval armor or Kevlar. But I question how well those modern expressions fit into a story of this type. But you will have to hunt for them yourself after you buy the story.

Empire of Avarice Chronicles of Kastania Book 1 edition by Tony Roberts Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The first book in a series of Empire books Avarice is well written, fast paced, and freed the author from the straight jacket of the Casca formula. He has a decayed empire rotting from within and a family determined to root out the corruption and restore Kastania to its former glory. Beset by enemies at its borders and enemies from within there are plots and subplots making an enjoyable read for someone wanting to travel to a far off place in a far off time and live numerous lives. I'm looking forward to investing many hours enjoying all of the books in this series.
It is a GREAT story.

At the outset I got Tony's book in the mail. And my first impression was, I must have received the wrong package, because Tony's Casca books are relatively short and thin, but I got this big, thick volume.

But nope -- it was Tony's book. So I looked inside to see how many pages it was, and it is almost 500 pages long. And the font size is really small. And with my 66-year old eyes, I need reading glasses these days, and I asked myself, how am I EVER gonna read through all of this?

But I started in anyway. And was glad I did, for from around Page 4 or so, I WAS HOOKED on to this story. I could not put it down.

Harry Turtledove could have written this story. Though I dunno if even he has written anything THIS long.
