Charming picture book featuring a child named Becky who guides her young readers on a tour of her butterfly garden. Becky's garden is designed as a wild flower garden with water features, a pond filled with fish, birdhouses and bee houses, but most importantly it provides a safe haven for butterflies. Monarch butterflies are quickly disappearing due to the rapid expansion of roads and cities. Becky's tour leads us through cone flowers, monarda, asters, goldenrod and milkweed. This garden is free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The monarch butterflies lay their eggs on the underside of milkweed leaves; which are the only kind of food they eat, but which are poisonous to humans. Once the eggs become caterpillars, Becky's dad carefully moves them to a cage where they continue to feed on milkweed leaves until they form a chrysalis. After about ten days they emerge as butterflies, when they are carefully released from their cage.

The illustrations depict Becky and her beautiful garden plants and animal friends. Story is based on Becky Lecroy, a genuine character whose parents raise monarch butterflies in their own wild flower backyard. Nice way to teach children about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly and the importance of conserving the species. Targeted for grades preschool through grade four, this book should be included on classroom shelves in elementary school as well as those in libraries and environmentally conscious parents who might want to undertake the project on a smaller scale. I personally plant milkweed in my tiny garden to encourage monarchs to settle there. Sadly, in recent years, I have noticed a dramatic drop in the lovely creatures that used to fill my backyard.

Becky the Butterfly Girl edition by Janet Young Vladimir Cebu Children eBooks Reviews

This is a sweet story that I like a lot because it teaches kids a bit more about nature. We've left the next generation some problems, and the more we can teach kids about nature, the better.
Another good book from Janet. It taught me some things I didn't know about monarch butterflies. Any milk weed I come across now will live. And thank you Becky the butterfly girl for your concern on this matter. Butterflies are very important.
This is a fun story for children to read it took me back to the days when I was a kid chasing butterflies and their life cycle, this is a good read for any child. Sometimes in our busy lives we tend to forget how things are created around us and it's always a good reminder to stop and enjoy the beauty around us.

I feel it is important that all children appreciate the natural world we live in, they should be taught to understand how things work in this world. It's a lesson in life. This is a delightful story about a child understanding the need to provide a home and food for butterflies and caring for the earth.
I especially liked the illustrations in this beautiful story and how the author told the story of Becky's wonderful backyard with all its glory - bird houses, pond, bee houses, flowers and butterflies. I learned a lot about how butterflies come to be. It's both educational and endearing. At the end of the book, Becky's real-life father tells a true story of how this passion for backyard butterfly gardening came to be. Made me like the story even more. Nice job, Janet Young.

Becky the Butterfly Girl
A story that is TRUE!
I’m a “nature enjoyer” you’ve embarrassed me. We enjoy the birds and the squirrels in our yard, now we have to start thinking about adding butterflies.
Thanks for opening the door to more treasures.
If you love caterpillars and butterflies, you will love this book! This book teaches the reader where butterflies live, how they live, how they are conceived, how they are born; and how they grow, develop and multiply. The author shares this information to help keep butterflies from becoming extinct. It is a great book, but as I read it, I wondered who was narrating the story...It was not clear exactly who was "telling the story". Overall, the book was very educational. I recommend it.
